helping a Guatemalan elementary school
Over the course of the last couple of months we have received updates from the school’s assistant principal along with photos showing the progress being made on the library furniture. The last set of pictures were breathtaking, as the final steps were revealed… I can’t wait to see those shelves lined with the books we are taking with us. Thank you to all that donated money towards the construction of the bookcases and to those that provided Spanish books too!

I’d like to share the overall project progress and see if you might be able to help bring us closer towards 100% completion. Here are the things we wanted to accomplish at the elementary school in Rio Camanibal, outside Chichicastenango:
- Purchase and install a 25 unit tablet-based computer lab with a RACHEL server pre-loaded with free educational content, including a K-12 curriculum approved by the Guatemala Ministry of Education
- Purchase and install a dedicated laptop for administrative use by the school
- Contract the construction and delivery of two bookcases for a school library – it has no library currently
- Purchase and deliver Spanish language children’s books
- Purchase and deliver school supplies
So far, we have provided funds for the construction and delivery of the two bookcases and collected nearly 1,000 Spanish library books. We have also provided funds for a dedicated laptop for the staff to share in the school office and have already purchased the RACHEL server and will transport it with us in August. We have begun collecting school supplies to take in excess luggage as well.
However, we are ACTIVELY raising money to fund the 25 tablets! We fully anticipate that profits from our charity rummage sale will provide most of the money we need to buy the tablets, but could still use a little help. If you’d like to contribute a few dollars to our efforts, it would be appreciated. Little amounts, when pooled together, can fund big things! Click here to donate!

The “right” opportunity arose when I learned about a travel opportunity for adoptive families which would include volunteer work and cultural sightseeing. Being members of that team had a profound impact on me, Lillian and Andrew. Not only were we able to make a real connection to our son’s birthplace, but we met incredibly warm and generous people, all of whom we now consider to be a part of our “family.” In addition to the volunteer work I shared with the Team, I also was able to “give back” by performing as my alter ego, “Farfel the Clown” at a barbecue for children of The Backyard School. It will remain one the proudest and happiest memories of my life.
